Graphite
For sketching, detail and gradual tonal values. H grades are lighter; B grades are softer and darker.
Graphite pencils, charcoal, pastels, coloured pencils, papers and accessories for building form, working with tonal values and developing line.
Tools selected according to hardness, density, layering ability and the way they respond to paper. For sketching, studies, observational drawing and more exploratory work.
Choosing drawing materials
Graphite, charcoal, pastel and coloured pencil do not offer the same density or precision. Paper matters just as much: its grain affects grip, blending and layering.
For sketching, detail and gradual tonal values. H grades are lighter; B grades are softer and darker.
For deep blacks, broad marks and blending. These materials need paper with enough grain to hold the particles.
For layering, colour mixing and texture. Watercolour pencils can also be diluted with water.
For beginners: an HB, 2B and 4B pencil with fine-grain paper are enough to work on construction, shading and contrast without buying unnecessary materials.
