Dry Pastels 72 colors – wooden box for drawing, values and gradients
This box contains 72 dry pastels for working on color drawing, value studies, blending, light transitions, and material overlays.
The powdery texture of dry pastels allows for laying down matte solids, blending with a finger or a tortillon, and then progressively building up shades through successive layers.
The wooden box helps organize colors and protect the sticks between sessions. This format is suitable for studio tests, sketchbooks, color studies, and more developed compositions.
INFORMATION
Dry pastel works by depositing pigment onto paper. Unlike wet paint, it does not require water: the color is applied directly, then modulated by pressure, rubbing, blending, or layering.
Slightly textured paper holds the powder better and allows for building up more layers. On overly smooth paper, pastel can slide, saturate quickly, or lose depth.
The rendering depends on the paper's grain, the pressure applied, the blending, and the possible use of a suitable fixative between layers.

USE & MAINTENANCE
Work on paper with sufficient grain to hold the powder. Start with large colored masses, then refine values, shadows, and highlights through successive layers.
Blend with a finger, tortillon, or soft cloth depending on the desired effect. To maintain sharp contrasts, avoid over-mixing all layers.
Dry pastel produces dust. Avoid blowing on the drawing: gently tap the sheet or carefully remove excess. Work in a ventilated area and wash hands after use.
Store the sticks in the box after use to limit shocks, breakage, and excessive mixing of color dust.
TO PAIR WITH
For sketches, value studies, and color tests, this box can accompany the
black sketchbook with beige paper.
To prepare a drawing base, enhance shadows, or work with matte blacks, you can combine it with the
black carbon pencil set.
To add opaque highlights to certain areas, depending on the support and the level of pastel fixation, you can complement it with the
set of 20 opaque white pens.

🤍 Ikane Studio Tip
Use textured paper to hold the powder. Lightly fix between layers if necessary to preserve depth, contrasts, and already worked areas.
