INCENSE TRACING GUIDE
Prepare the ash, form a continuous line, remove the stencil cleanly and improve the combustion of powdered incense.
An incense trail depends on several small conditions working together: a level ash bed, a continuous line of powder, regular density, dry material and enough air around the burning edge.
When the line goes out, burns too fast or breaks after the stencil is lifted, the cause is usually visible. This guide helps you identify it before starting again.

The ash may be uneven, the powder may be poorly distributed or the stencil may have been removed sideways.
The trail may be too thick, overfilled or exposed to too much air movement.

Powdered incense is placed in a continuous line over a bed of ash, then lit at one end so that the ember follows the pattern.
It creates a heat-resistant base and allows air to circulate around the line. It should be level without being packed into a hard surface.
It defines the shape and width of the trail. It must rest flat so that powder does not escape underneath.
It forms the combustible line. Its fineness, dryness and ability to sustain an ember influence the result.
One end must be lit clearly without disturbing the rest of the pattern.

Check continuity, thickness, ash, powder condition, lighting and air movement separately.
Even a small gap stops the ember. Inspect corners, junctions and the point where the stencil was lifted.
There may not be enough combustible material to carry the ember through the full pattern.
Overfilled areas burn differently from sections where the powder is loose or incomplete.
A tilted surface changes the line depth. A heavily compressed base can also reduce air around the trail.
Humidity can cause clumps and poor continuity. Some fragrant powders are not designed to burn alone.
A strong draft can accelerate one side, cool the ember or move loose powder.

Correct one variable at a time so you can see which change improves the burn.

Work slowly enough to inspect each stage before lighting.
Distribute the ash evenly and remove hollows or slopes.
Check that every part touches the ash surface.
Distribute powder across the full pattern and remove excess.
Raise the stencil slowly without sliding it sideways.
Repair gaps, then light one end and confirm that a stable ember has formed.
