Pan watercolors – metal tin for illustration, washes and sketchbooks

This solid pan watercolor palette allows for working with color through dilution, transparency, layering, and gradual mixing.

The pans reactivate with water using a brush. The metal tin format protects the colors between sessions and is suitable for studio work, sketchbooks, or light outdoor use.

It supports learning about mixing, color studies, simple washes, illustrations, and more complex compositions on suitable watercolor paper.

INFORMATION

Pan watercolors allow you to take only the necessary amount of color. By adding more or less water, you can achieve a light wash, a more intense color, or a smoother transition.

Unlike opaque paint, watercolor relies on the transparency of the pigment and the brightness of the paper. The white of the support remains important: it is used to preserve light areas and breathing spaces in the drawing.

The result depends on the paper, the amount of water, the brush used, the drying time, and the number of superimposed layers.

FEATURES

Type: Solid pan watercolor
Packaging: Metal tin
Function: Reactivate color with water, dilute, layer, and build transparencies
Recommended supports: Watercolor paper, thick paper, or sketchbook suitable for wet techniques

USE & CARE

Lightly moisten the pan with a clean brush, then gradually pick up the color. Starting with less water allows for better control of pigment intensity.

For a light wash, dilute further on a palette or mixing area. For a denser color, reduce water and apply multiple passes only after drying.

Allow the pans to dry before closing the metal tin to prevent trapped moisture.

Clean brushes with clear water after use, then wipe the tin if water or pigment remains on the edges.

TO PAIR WITH

To work on paper suitable for wet techniques, this palette can be paired with the 300g pocket watercolor sketchbook.

For washes, flat areas, backgrounds, and transitions, you can combine it with the set of bamboo flat brushes or the ArtSecret watercolor brush set.

For clearer mixes, you can supplement with the compartmented ceramic palette.

For a compact setup with pans, inclined support, and mixing area, you can also check out the folding wooden watercolor board or the Drawing selection.

🤍 Ikane workshop tip
Use little water initially, then adjust gradually. Building color in thin layers, allowing each layer to dry between applications, preserves the transparency and depth of the shades.
