Japanese Cotton Paper Cards – 12 sheets, three textures for ink, drawing, and light watercolor

These 100% cotton paper cards are suitable for ink, drawing, calligraphy, graphite, charcoal, and light watercolor tests on a compact format.

Each pack includes 12 cards in 105 × 155 mm format, available in fine, medium, or coarse grain depending on the desired level of precision, texture, or absorption.

Cotton paper gradually absorbs ink and remains more stable than standard paper with light water layers, while retaining a surface sensitive to line work.

INFORMATION

These cards are designed for material tests, small compositions, calligraphic fragments, value studies, painted cards, texture research, or tests of reaction between paper, tool, and pigment.

The 105 × 155 mm format allows for working on a short image, a motif, a letter, a drawn note, or a series of samples without using a large sheet.

Cotton offers better resistance to repeated strokes and light layers of water. For very wet washes or abundant flat areas, it is best to first test the paper's reaction on a card.

CHOOSING THE GRAIN

Fine grain: retains more precision. Suitable for crisp lines, writing, regular details, fine ink strokes, and compositions requiring a more controlled surface.

Medium grain: offers a balance between control and texture. Suitable for light overlays, pressure variations, mixed media experiments, graphite, ink, and small watercolor touches.

Coarse grain: reveals more of the material's texture. Rubbings, irregularities, and pigment build-up become more visible, especially with charcoal, dry pencils, thick inks, or textured gestures.

USE & TIPS

Test the tool on a first card before starting a series. The same pencil, brush, or pen reacts differently depending on the chosen grain.

For ink or light watercolor, start with little water. Gradually adding moisture allows for better control of spreading and prevents saturating the fibers too quickly.

For charcoal, graphite, or dry pencils, choose the grain according to the desired effect: fine for details, medium for balance, coarse to emphasize texture.

Allow water-worked cards to dry completely before stacking them, to prevent transfers, marks, or warping due to moisture.

PAIR WITH

For dry drawing and values, these cards can be paired with the set of 12 carbon sketch pencils, the soft carbon charcoal pencils or the white charcoal pencils.

For writing and fine lines, they can be used with the 30ml ink bottle for dip pens, the dip pen set or the ink writing set with glass pen.

For color, they can complement the Super Vision watercolor pigments, the pan watercolor paint set or the ceramic compartment palette.

For fine brushwork, you can also pair them with the fine sable brush or the ArtSecret watercolor brush set.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
The support directly influences the drawing style. The same tool produces different sensations depending on the chosen grain: sharper on fine grain, more balanced on medium grain, more textured on coarse grain.
