Understand ink diffusion, adjust water and brush load, and choose the right paper for calligraphy, ink wash and brush drawing.
A line that widens does not necessarily mean the ink or paper is poor quality. The result depends on several variables working together: paper absorbency, water volume, ink density, brush load, pressure, speed and contact time.
Before replacing your materials, identify what is actually happening. Even diffusion, feathering, a dark spot at the beginning of a stroke and ink visible on the reverse are different problems.

This is mainly diffusion caused by absorbency, dilution or a slow stroke.
The brush is probably overloaded or held still before moving.
Too much liquid has been deposited, or layers were added before drying.

The word “bleeding” often describes several different reactions. Naming the right one helps you adjust the correct variable.
Ink spreads evenly through the fibres. The line widens and the edge becomes softer. This can be intentional in ink wash and sumi-e.
The edge breaks into small irregular branches. The brush may be overloaded, the paper very open or the stroke too slow.
Liquid reaches the reverse of the sheet. The cause is usually excess volume, repeated layers or an unsuitable paper structure.
The mark is visible through thin paper without liquid necessarily passing through it. Thin paper is not automatically too absorbent.

Paper is only one part of the system. Check absorbency, dilution, brush load, point shape, pressure and speed separately.
Highly absorbent paper receives liquid quickly and leaves little time to correct the stroke.
More diluted ink contains more water to absorb. Dense ink can still bleed if the brush carries too much liquid.
Concentration and volume are different. A dark mixture can still overload the brush.
A broad or very soft point carries more liquid. A fine, reformed point concentrates the deposit.
When the point opens, it deposits liquid over a wider area and increases diffusion.
A stationary brush keeps releasing ink. Dark spots often appear at starts, corners and hesitations.

Change one variable at a time. Otherwise, you will not know which adjustment improved the result.

There is no universally superior paper. The right support is the one whose absorbency matches the stroke and level of control you need.
SHARP EDGE
Choose treated or less absorbent paper for precise starts, structured characters and stable contours.
BALANCE
Semi-treated paper balances diffusion and readability. It is useful for repeated strokes, pressure exercises and first washes.
DIFFUSION
Untreated paper reacts quickly to water and highlights speed, brush reserve and changes in ink density.

Before changing paper, check the amount of liquid held in the point and the density of the ink mixture.
THE BRUSH
A broad or very soft brush can hold a large reserve without looking saturated. Reform the point against the edge of the inkstone or dish to remove excess liquid.
The point should remain together, no drop should fall by itself, and the first contact should not create a round blot.
SOLID INK
Start with only a few drops of water on the inkstone. Grind until you obtain a dense base, then move part of it to a separate dish to create lighter values.

One failed test is not enough to reject a paper or brush. Compare several controlled trials first.
KEEP THE PAPER
Only one brush feathers; the problem appears only with strong dilution; or the mark becomes clean as soon as the point is unloaded.
CHANGE THE PAPER
Every stroke branches even with little liquid; the surface pills immediately; or fine detail remains impossible after several adjustments.
CHANGE THE BRUSH
The point no longer reforms, the hairs open without pressure, or the reserve releases abruptly on several papers.

These answers help you check the most common causes before starting another series of strokes.
The brush may hold more liquid than it appears to, the paper may be highly absorbent, or the point may remain still for too long. Try a faster line with a slightly unloaded point.
Reduce liquid volume, avoid repeated passes on a wet area and allow each layer to dry before adding another.
No. Untreated Xuan spreads quickly, semi-treated Xuan offers more control, and treated Xuan generally keeps a sharper edge.
Not necessarily. Thickness, sizing, surface treatment and fibre structure are different properties.
Strong dilution, insufficient grinding or deep penetration into the fibres can reduce the visual depth of the black.
Not for sharp characters. Damp paper increases diffusion and is better suited to some washes and pictorial effects.
