Ebony Tea Pick – Pu’er Tool for Separating Compressed Tea Cakes
This ebony tea pick is used to separate leaves from a compressed tea cake, especially Pu’er, without unnecessarily breaking them.
Its fine point is inserted into the edge of the cake to gradually pry off small sections. You don't cut the material; you gently open it to preserve the leaf structure.
At 16.2 cm long, the tool provides a stable and precise grip for preparing the tea dose before brewing, whether in a gaiwan, teapot, or for a Gong Fu Cha service.
INFORMATION
Some tea cakes, particularly Pu’er teas, are pressed into compact blocks. A tea pick allows you to enter the material from the side and then separate the leaves with more precision than with a knife or an overly broad tool.
The goal is not to break the cake into hard pieces, but to release the compression. A gentler removal limits tea dust, preserves the leaves better, and prepares a more consistent infusion.
The pick is mainly used for compressed teas: cakes, bricks, nests, or compact portions depending on the tea's shape.
FEATURES
Recommended Tea: Pu'er, compressed tea, tea brick, compact cake
Material: Ebony
Length: 16.2 cm
Function: Insert, lift, detach and pick leaves without cutting them
USAGE & CARE
Insert the pick into the side of the cake, never the center. Working from the edge allows you to follow the layers of compressed tea and minimize leaf breakage.
Lever gently, with small movements. If the cake resists, move the pick slightly rather than forcing it in the same spot.
After use, remove tea dust with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid prolonged soaking, abrasive products, and excessive moisture to preserve the wood.
The pick is sharp: store the tool after use and keep out of reach of children.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Insert the pick into the edge of the cake and lever gently. The correct technique does not force; it seeks the natural separation of the compressed leaves.
