Beginners often face similar labels: HB, 4B, fine-grain paper, round brushes, liquid ink, gouache, watercolour or loop tools. Each choice changes the way the material behaves.
This guide explains the main differences, what each tool is for and when to choose it. The “Learn” page remains focused on exercises and progress.
H pencils are harder and lighter. B pencils are softer and darker. HB sits between the two. For beginners, HB, 2B and 4B cover construction, shading and stronger contrast.
Controlled, precise and suitable for sketching, detail and tonal studies.
Powdery, deep and easy to blend. Useful for broad movement and strong value.
Used dry through layering, pressure and optical colour mixing.
Works dry, then dissolves with water on suitable paper.
Weight indicates paper mass, but grain, sizing and absorbency determine behaviour. Smooth paper suits nibs and detail. Fine grain is versatile. Strong grain suits charcoal and pastel. Watercolour usually benefits from 300 gsm paper.
Transparent, fluid and quick-drying.
Matte, more opaque and suitable for flat colour.
Fast-drying, versatile and suitable for many prepared surfaces.
Slow-drying and suited to blending, glazing and long working times.
Round brushes suit detail, washes and ink. Flat brushes create edges and flat areas. Soft fibres hold fluid; firmer fibres move thicker paint.
Fountain-pen ink is designed to flow through a mechanism. Drawing ink is intended for nibs and brushes and may damage fountain pens. Ink sticks are ground with water and allow custom density.
Fountain pens suit regular writing. Rollerballs are fluid with less maintenance. Fineliners create consistent lines. Dip pens offer line variation for drawing and calligraphy.
Modelling tools push and smooth material. Loop tools remove and carve. Cutting wire separates clay. Gouges remove material from wood and other firm surfaces.
Begin with a small number of tools that perform clearly different functions. Add another item only when a real limitation appears.
HB is firmer and lighter. 2B is softer and darker, making it useful for shading.
No. Use only ink explicitly designed for fountain pens.
A versatile round brush for watercolour and ink; add a flat brush for thicker paint.
