Understand what happens between water, pigment and paper, then correct halos, cauliflower edges and dull mixtures.
A watercolour mark changes while it dries. A clean wash can develop a hard ring, a damp area can push pigment outward, and a fresh colour can become grey after too much mixing.
These effects do not have the same cause. The useful question is not simply “Did I use too much water?”, but “At what stage of drying did water return to the paper?”

The three effects may appear in the same painting, but they require different corrections.
The outer edge dries before the centre. Pigment moves with the remaining water and accumulates along the boundary.
Often caused by a puddle, an uneven support angle or a wash left to dry without controlling its lower edge.
New water enters a surface that has started to lose its shine. The fresher, wetter area pushes the first layer away.
It may be accidental, but it can also create useful cloud, stone and plant textures.
The colour loses clarity because pigments have been mixed repeatedly, complementary colours have been overused or a dirty brush has contaminated the palette.
The solution is usually fewer pigments and less movement, not more paint.

The same brushload behaves differently on dry, damp, glossy and partly drying paper.
The edge stays sharper. Useful for details, controlled shapes and glazing over a fully dry layer.
The surface no longer shines, but still accepts soft transitions with more control than wet paper.
Pigment moves freely. Useful for large washes and soft transitions, but precise edges are difficult.
The risky stage. Fresh water can push pigment outward and create blooms.

Use the same colour on one sheet. Change only the paper moisture and the moment when water is added.
Observe the sharper boundary and the way pigment stays where the brush places it.
Observe softer edges and a more gradual transition.
Observe the pushed pigment and the cauliflower-shaped edge.
Observe a cleaner glaze and a more stable superposition.

Muddy colour is usually a mixing problem, not a lack of pigment.
Begin with two colours. Add a third only if the first mixture remains readable and useful.
Residual pigment enters the next mixture and changes its temperature or value.
Repeated brushing disturbs the layer, mixes complementary traces and can damage the surface.
Keep pure colours separate from mixtures and reserve one clean area for light dilutions.

A broad wash brush, a compartmented palette and suitable paper make the water level easier to read and repeat.

A wash brush holds more liquid than a detail brush. Prepare the full quantity before starting and unload the point if a drop forms.

Quick answers to the most common watercolour drying and mixing problems.
Keep the wash moving, control the lower bead and remove excess water with a clean damp brush before the surface begins to dry.
Do not add a wetter stroke to a layer that has started to lose its shine. Wait until it is fully dry or keep the whole area evenly wet.
Sometimes its edge can be softened with a clean damp brush, but aggressive rubbing may damage the paper. It is often safer to integrate the mark into the texture.
Too many pigments, dirty water, a contaminated palette or repeated brushing can reduce colour clarity.
For a clean glaze, yes. For soft fusion, work while both areas have a similar moisture level.
No. It resists water better than lighter paper, but fibre composition, sizing, format and water quantity also influence deformation.
