Depending on the variant chosen, the hardness of the lead modifies the stroke: a soft lead allows for deeper blacks and wider shadows; a medium lead offers a balance between line and blending; a hard lead is more suitable for outlines, construction lines, and details.
The wooden body protects the lead and makes it easy to grip. The box keeps the pencils together, allows them to be transported, and provides a clean base for drawing in the studio, in class, or in a sketchbook.

Use a hard lead to place the main lines, then a medium or soft lead to build the shadows. Charcoal can transfer easily: fix the drawing if necessary, especially before storing it or layering it with other sheets.
