Set of 8 soft charcoal carbon pencils – matte blacks, shades and values

This set of 8 carbon pencils allows you to create deep, matte, and versatile blacks, without the shine sometimes found with graphite.

Their soft texture is suitable for quick sketches, value studies, gradual shading, and more elaborate drawings. The black applies easily, can be layered, and blended depending on the pressure applied.

Encased in wood, the pencils offer a more stable and cleaner grip than a bare charcoal stick. Used flat, they lay down masses and volumes. Used on the tip, they allow you to refine a contour, mark a line, or reinforce a specific area.

INFORMATION

Carbon pencils allow for strong contrasts, deep shadows, and softer transitions through blending. They are suitable for sketchbooks as well as preparatory studies or observational drawings.

Their matte finish is useful for drawings that require dense blacks without metallic reflections. They can complement graphite when a deeper black is needed.

The result depends on the paper's grain, pressure, number of layers, blending, and the eventual use of a suitable fixative.

CHARACTERISTICS

Content: 8 pencils
Type: carbon pencils / soft charcoal
Hardness: soft
Materials: natural charcoal and wood
Finish: matte black, deep and blendable

USAGE & MAINTENANCE

To construct a drawing, start by laying down large masses with the side of the pencil, then use the tip to define contours, tensions, and shadow areas.

The material can be blended with a finger, paper, or a tortillon depending on the desired effect. To maintain deep blacks, avoid blending all areas with the same intensity.

To limit unintentional smudges and preserve already laid layers, lightly fix the drawing if necessary with a fixative suitable for charcoal or carbon.

Sharpen with a suitable sharpener or a blade according to the desired point. Protect the pencils from impacts to limit internal lead breakage.

TO BE PAIRED WITH

To add lights and highlights on toned paper, this set can be paired with white charcoal pencils.

For sketches, value studies, and research on beige paper, you can use it with the black sketchbook with beige paper.

For mixing deep blacks, matte colors, and powdery transitions, it can complement the box of 72 soft pastels in a wooden box.

For more opaque graphic highlights on dark surfaces or fixed areas, you can also consult the set of 20 opaque white pens or the Drawing selection.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
First work on the shadows in broad masses, without seeking too much detail too early. Then use the tip to structure the drawing. Carbon reveals its full depth when layered calmly, layer after layer.
