Squirrel mop imitation watercolor brush — n°4, 6 or 8
This mop brush, made with synthetic squirrel imitation fibers, allows for a significant load of water and color, perfect for creating washes, gradients, backgrounds, and smooth transitions in watercolor.
Its flexible tuft facilitates fluid strokes without the stiffness of a classic round brush. It is primarily suitable for transparent and diluted techniques: watercolor, water-based ink, light gouache, or pigments prepared as washes.
Ikane offers three complementary sizes: No. 4 for controlled washes and small formats, No. 6 for versatile use, and No. 8 for backgrounds, flat washes, and larger surfaces.
INFORMATION
The squirrel imitation brush replicates the sought-after flexibility of traditional mop brushes, with a tuft composed here of synthetic nylon fibers.
Its primary function is to carry enough water and pigment to cover an area without needing to reload the brush after each stroke. It is particularly useful for skies, backgrounds, blends, and wet-on-wet transitions.
It can also be used with water-based ink or highly diluted gouache. For very fine outlines, tight details, or thick paint, a more responsive round brush is still more suitable.

No. 4 — Precise washes
For sketchbooks, small compositions, controlled areas, and smaller colored passages.

For backgrounds, large flat washes, large water reserves, and compositions on more extended formats.
USE & CARE
Wet the tuft before picking up color, then remove excess water on the edge of the container or palette. Load the brush gradually according to the desired intensity and fluidity.
For a uniform wash, prepare enough color before starting and work without letting the edge of the passage dry between strokes.
After use, rinse the fibers with clear water until all pigments are gone. Gently reshape the tuft with your fingers, without pulling on the fibers.
Do not leave the brush soaking in water: this can deform the tuft and weaken the assembly. Let it dry flat or head-down before storing it.

To prepare several dilution levels, use this brush with the
compartmented ceramic palette.
Its separate areas allow you to keep a dense color, an intermediate mix, and a lighter wash during the same session.

🤍 Ikane Studio Tip
To achieve a smooth wash, prepare all the necessary color before the first stroke. Tilt the paper slightly and keep the bottom edge of the wash wet so that each stroke joins the previous one without creating a dry demarcation.
