Semi-treated vegetable paper roll – hemp or Xuan for ink and calligraphy
This semi-treated vegetable paper roll allows you to practice ink painting, calligraphy, wash painting, and brush drawing on a long, continuous, and format-free surface.
With its 40 cm width and 100 meters length, it supports stroke repetitions, pressure tests, dilution research, and compositions that require more space than a pre-cut sheet.
Its semi-treated nature offers a balance between absorption and control: the ink enters the fiber without spreading too quickly, allowing for a legible line while observing the effects of water, brush, and gesture.
INFORMATION
The roll format allows you to unroll only the necessary length, then cut or keep the strip depending on its use. It is suitable for long practice sessions, series of gestures, horizontal compositions, or repeated tests.
Two semi-treated variants are offered. Semi-treated hemp offers a denser and more resistant surface, suitable for firm strokes, long repetitions, and tracing tests.
Semi-treated Xuan offers a more flexible surface, with smoother diffusion, designed for ink nuances, washes, load variations, and more airy strokes.
FEATURES
Dimensions: 40 cm × 100 m
Format: roll
Absorption: intermediate, with more controlled diffusion than untreated paper
Function: repeat, test, unroll, cut, and adapt the length to the work in progress
USE & STORAGE
Unroll only the necessary length, then stabilize the ends with a light weight, a gentle clip, or a clean support to prevent the paper from re-rolling during work.
Test the paper's reaction with your ink before final work. Very diluted ink, a heavily loaded brush, or a slow stroke will produce more pronounced diffusion than a quick, less wet stroke.
Choose semi-treated hemp for a more resistant support and semi-treated Xuan for a more fluid, nuanced, and sensitive practice to water variations.
Store the roll in a dry place, away from humidity, dust, and direct light. Handle with clean hands to avoid marks on areas intended for ink.
COMPOSE YOUR INK SPACE
To prepare ink by hand, this roll can be combined with the
7.5 cm ink stone,
the
natural ink stone with lid
or the
16 cm solid ink stick.
For line work, it can accompany the
bamboo calligraphy brush,
the
traditional rabbit hair brush
or the
set of 5 Chinese calligraphy brushes.
To rest brushes between passes and keep the space clean, you can complement with the
jade effect ceramic brush rest,
the
blue Dragon ceramic brush rest
or the
black studio brush holder.
For practice on pre-cut sheets, you can also consult the
semi-ripe Xuan paper
or the
handmade Xuan paper.
🤍 Ikane Studio Tip
Unroll only the necessary length, then stabilize the ends before preparing the ink. Semi-treated hemp better supports firm strokes; semi-treated Xuan allows for more nuanced breathing.
