Semi-Sized Xuan Paper – 10 sheets for calligraphy, ink, and wash painting

This semi-sized Xuan paper is designed for calligraphy, ink painting, wash painting, and stroke practice on a surface more sensitive than standard paper.

The semi-sized version offers a balance between absorption and control: ink diffuses into the fibers, but the stroke remains more legible than on highly absorbent Xuan paper.

The pack includes 10 sheets, to be used whole or cut to the desired size. It is suitable for regular practice as well as more elaborate compositions, when you want to observe the density, "breath," and variations of the ink.

INFORMATION

Xuan paper is valued in ink practices for its ability to receive the stroke without completely fixing it. It reveals variations in pressure, dilution, and brush speed.

Semi-sized paper is more controllable than very raw or very absorbent paper. It allows for some diffusion while limiting overly fast bleeds, especially for calligraphy, outlines, and moderate washes.

The result depends on the amount of water, the ink used, the brush, and the contact time with the paper. It is advisable to do some tests before a final composition.

FEATURES

Quantity: 10 sheets
Usage: calligraphy, ink painting, washes, sumi-e, stroke exercises
Property: balanced absorption, controlled ink diffusion
Cut: sheets can be recut as needed
Color: natural tone, varies by paper
Compatibility: calligraphy brushes, liquid ink, ink sticks, colored washes

USE & CARE

Start with a light water and ink load to observe the paper's reaction. Then gradually increase the dilution to test washes, gradients, and more diffuse areas.

For calligraphy, use a lightly saturated brush at first to maintain a legible stroke. For washes, work in thin layers and allow the paper to absorb before overlaying a new area.

Store sheets flat, away from moisture and creases. Handle with clean hands to avoid greasy marks, which can alter ink absorption.

COMPOSE YOUR INK KIT

For stroke work, this paper can be paired with the bamboo calligraphy brush or the traditional rabbit hair brush.

To prepare traditional ink, it can accompany ink sticks and the 7.5 cm inkstone for beginners.

To rest brushes between passes and keep your table clean, you can also use the Blue Dragon ceramic brush rest or the black workshop brush holder.

To find papers, brushes, inks, and accessories related to stroke work, you can consult the Ink & Calligraphy collection.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Semi-sized paper is a good starting point for understanding how ink reacts without completely losing control of the stroke. Starting with little water, then gradually increasing the brush load, helps to understand how the paper spreads or retains the material.
