Set of 3 Chinese calligraphy brushes — mixed fibers.

Three sizes to switch from precise lines to washes without changing your grip. This set is suitable for Chinese calligraphy, sumi-e, and ink painting.

Small, medium, large: the wider the fiber part, the more ink the brush retains and the longer the stroke. The small size prioritizes control; the large size, amplitude and continuity.

Information

Mixed fibers offer a flexible tip with enough stiffness to work on pressure changes, stroke starts and tip returns.

The stained wood handles remain light in hand. The box allows you to keep the three sizes together, provided you always store the brushes perfectly dry.

Which brush to choose?

Small size — 3.7 cm fibers

For small characters, details, short strokes and exercises that require little ink reservoir.

Medium size — 4.3 cm fibers

The most versatile for common exercises, changes of direction and pressure variations.

Large size — 5 cm fibers

For large characters, ample movements, solid areas and washes that require more water or ink.

On Xuan paper: untreated paper diffuses quickly and requires a decisive stroke. Semi-treated paper slows down the ink and facilitates learning pressures.

Preparation and maintenance
  1. Soften the fibers in cold or slightly warm water if they are still sized.
  2. Remove excess water without twisting the fibers.
  3. Gradually load the ink, then test the brush on a scrap of the same paper.
  4. After use, rinse with clear water and gently reshape the tip.
  5. Allow to dry flat or suspended, then replace the brush in the box once dry.

🤍 Ikane workshop tip

Draw the same line with all three brushes, with ink of the same density. You will immediately see which one best holds its point, which one extends the stroke and which one gives you the control you're looking for.
