Wooden potter's paddle – compressing, beating, and shaping clay

This wooden potter's paddle allows you to compress, strengthen, and shape clay during modeling, coil building, or slab construction.

Used with controlled percussion, it helps to densify the material, correct a volume, thin a wall, or stabilize a shape without direct finger intervention.

The natural, untreated, and polished wood offers a stable grip. Depending on the model chosen, the striking surface can be smooth or toothed, to assist with different stages of shaping.

INFORMATION

The potter's paddle is used to work clay with light, repeated taps. It allows you to compress the material, strengthen a structure, and adjust volumes without crushing the entire form.

It is particularly useful for coil-built pieces, slab-built forms, hollow volumes, or surfaces that require progressive consolidation.

The result depends on the clay's moisture, the force of percussion, the type of surface used, and the timing of intervention during drying.

CHARACTERISTICS

Material: untreated natural wood
Finish: polished wood
Compatibility: clay, pottery, modeling, coil building, slab building, hand sculpting
Function: densify material, refine volumes, and strengthen walls

USE & CARE

Use on clay that is still damp but structured enough to withstand light percussion. Start with gentle taps, then gradually adjust according to the material's resistance.

The smooth version is suitable for final compressions, surfaces you wish to keep even, and revisions that should not mark the clay.

The toothed version is used more at the beginning of the work, when you want to grip, structure, or prepare a surface before adding more material.

After use, remove clay residue with a damp cloth, then allow to dry completely. Avoid prolonged soaking to preserve the wood.

PAIR WITH

To shape, smooth, mark, and refine volumes, this paddle can accompany the 9-piece modeling tool set.

To clean edges, refine contours, and refine details after shaping, you can pair it with the stainless steel clay finishing tool.

To hollow out, remove more material, or work more pronounced volumes, it can complement the curved sculpting tool for clay or the set of 4 hollow tools for clay and ceramics.

To measure proportions, check diameters, or prepare a regular shape before compression, you can also consult the measuring and tracing compass for ceramics.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Use the smooth version to compress without marking, and the toothed version at the beginning of the work to grip or structure the material. It's better to repeat light taps than to try to correct the volume with a single press.
