Celadon ceramic dish – ink, pigments, washes and calligraphy
This celadon ceramic dish is used to prepare a few drops of ink, water or pigment during a calligraphy, sumi-e, wash or brush painting session.
Its slightly hollow shape helps control small dilutions: denser black, intermediate value, light wash or pigment picked up with a little water.
The bamboo motif appears subtly under the celadon glaze. The shade changes depending on the light, the amount of liquid and the depth of the ink or pigment used.
INFORMATION
This dish is used to prepare small quantities rather than a large volume of mixture. It is suitable for precise movements: loading a brush, adjusting a dilution, testing a value or keeping a lighter ink next to a concentrated black.
It can be used with ink prepared on stone, liquid inks, water-based pigments, light washes or colors used with a fine brush.
It can also temporarily hold a brush between two strokes, provided that the tip rests gently and is not crushed against the edge.
FEATURES
Material: glazed celadon ceramic
Pattern: bamboo
Dimensions: approximately 9.7 cm × H 2 cm
Function: prepare, dilute, separate a value, adjust the amount of water and control brush loading
USE & CARE
Pour a few drops of water or a small amount of ink into the dish. Gradually add water to obtain a lighter value, rather than diluting too much from the start.
For washes, prepare a more concentrated base, then lighten it in small touches. This method allows for better control of blacks, grays and transitions.
Rinse the dish with clear water after use, before the ink or pigments dry in a thick layer on the glaze.
Dry with a soft cloth or let air dry. Avoid impacts: ceramic remains a rigid and breakable material.
TO PAIR WITH
To prepare traditional ink, this dish can accompany the
Mosong traditional ink stick,

or the
set of 3 Chinese calligraphy brushes.
To prepare several dilutions at the same time, you can supplement with the
ceramic compartment palette
or the
compartmented ceramic palette.
For brush painting with color, it can also accompany the
set of traditional Chinese gouache paints
or
Super Vision watercolor pigments.
🤍 Ikane workshop tip
Preparing several levels of dilution in the dish allows for more vibrant and less uniform blacks. A few drops are often enough to completely transform the depth of the line.
