Reusable Calligraphy Mat – Water Practice, No Paper or Consumables Needed

This reusable calligraphy mat allows you to practice brush strokes with clear water, without paper, pigment, or consumables to replace.

The wet brush temporarily reveals the stroke on the surface, then the writing gradually disappears as it dries. The mat allows you to write, observe, correct, and start again.

Its long format of 140 × 42 cm facilitates successive repetitions, rhythm exercises, warm-ups, and character learning before practicing on a definitive medium.

INFORMATION

This mat is designed for calligraphy training: character structure, movement regularity, pressure control, brush placement, and stroke repetition.

The goal is not to preserve the trace, but to repeat. The gradual disappearance of the stroke helps to identify hesitations, breaks in speed, and differences in pressure.

It is suitable for beginners learning the basics as well as more advanced individuals who wish to warm up, work on a character, or correct a movement before transferring to paper.

FEATURES

Functionality: water-revealed writing, then gradual disappearance upon drying
Material: thickened Oxford canvas with treated surface
Dimensions: approx. 140 × 42 cm
Usage: calligraphy training, stroke repetition, warm-up, character learning
Compatibility: calligraphy brushes used with clear water
Consumables needed: none

USAGE & CARE

Fill a small dish with clear water, wet the brush, then remove excess water before drawing. An overly loaded brush can leave too wide a mark or slow down drying.

Repeat the same character several times along the entire length of the mat. Observe differences in pressure, axis stability, and movement continuity.

Allow to dry naturally before rolling or storing the mat. Avoid folding it sharply to preserve the working surface.

Use only clear water. Pigments, colored liquids, markers, or tinted products can stain the surface and prevent its intended use.

PAIR WITH

For water practice, this mat can be used with the bamboo calligraphy brush, the traditional rabbit hair brush or the set of stiff fiber calligraphy brushes.

To rest the brush between repetitions, you can complement with the jade-effect ceramic brush rest or the Blue Dragon brush rest.

To store or dry brushes after rinsing, you can also consult the hanging calligraphy brush holder.

To find tools related to brush learning, you can consult the Calligraphy selection.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Repeat the same character several times along the entire length of the mat. The gradual disappearance of the stroke helps to better observe the actual rhythm of the gesture, without focusing too quickly on the final result.
