Traditional Chinese brush set – calligraphy, wash, and ink painting

This set of traditional Chinese brushes is designed for calligraphy, ink painting, wash techniques, and regular practice of brushstrokes.

The various brushes offer different responses in hand: soft bristles, firmer bristles, or mixed bristles depending on the model, allowing for exploration of thick lines, fine lines, long lines, and pressure variations.

The set includes a brush roll, useful for storing tools, transporting them, and allowing them to dry more properly after rinsing.

INFORMATION

This set allows you to compare several stroke sensations on absorbent paper: water load, pigment retention, tip flexibility, fiber return, and line stability.

Softer brushes are ideal for washes, broad gestures, and fluid variations. Firmer brushes provide more control for structured characters, crisp lines, and strong strokes.

The result depends on the paper, dilution, the amount of water in the fiber, and the pressure applied. On highly absorbent Xuan paper, the stroke spreads quickly; on semi-treated paper, it remains more legible and controlled.

CHARACTERISTICS

Handles: wood
Bristles: soft, firm, and mixed depending on the brush
Dimensions: approximately 300 × 120 × 40 mm
Compatibility: ink prepared on stone, liquid ink, watercolor washes, water-based pigments

USE & CARE

Before first use, gently dampen the bristles with clean water to soften the fiber and prepare the tip.

Load the brush gradually. For a sharper line, remove excess water or color on the edge of the inkstone, dish, or palette before drawing.

After use, rinse the bristles thoroughly with clean water until all color is gone. Do not twist the tip: gently reshape it with your fingers.

Allow brushes to air dry before storing them in the brush roll. Storing them too quickly while the bristles are still damp can deform the fiber or trap moisture.

TO PAIR WITH

To prepare ink by hand, this set can be paired with the solid ink stick, the traditional Mosong ink stick or the 7.5 cm inkstone.

To observe stroke diffusion, you can use it with handmade Xuan paper, semi-ripe Xuan paper or the semi-treated vegetable paper roll.

To work with color using brushes, it can complement the traditional Chinese watercolor paint set or the compartmented ceramic palette.

To rest your brushes during a session, you can check out the jade-effect ceramic brush rest or the Blue Dragon brush rest.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Rinse thoroughly after use, then let the brushes dry before closing them in the brush roll. To better feel the differences between the tips, test each brush with the same dilution on the same paper.
