Inkstone and Inkstick – Starter Set for Calligraphy and Sumi-e

This starter set brings together a natural black inkstone and a matching inkstick for traditional ink preparation through manual grinding.

The slightly concave surface of the stone allows for smooth circular motion. By adding a few drops of water and then rubbing the stick against the stone, the ink gradually forms.

Its compact size is suitable for initial practices in calligraphy, sumi-e, ink drawing, or washes. It allows you to prepare a small amount of ink on demand, without setting up bulky equipment.

INFORMATION

This set is designed for beginners to start under good conditions or to establish a regular ink practice. The stone is used to grind the stick, while water allows you to adjust the resulting density.

The longer the grinding, the denser, blacker, and deeper the ink becomes. Shorter grinding, with more water, produces lighter ink, suitable for washes or dilution exercises.

The compact size is suitable for practice at home, on a desk, or in a studio. The nuances of the stone, surface details, and finishes may vary slightly between pieces.

CHARACTERISTICS

Stone: natural black stone
Stone dimensions: approx. 6.5 × 12 × 1.6 cm
Inkstick included: approx. 2.3 × 9.3 × 1 cm
Contents: 1 inkstone + 1 inkstick
Care: rinse with clear water and air dry

USE & CARE

Place a few drops of clear water on the stone, then rub the inkstick in slow, steady movements. Add water gradually to better control the concentration.

For light ink, reduce grinding time or dilute further. For a deeper black, extend grinding until a denser ink is obtained.

After use, rinse the stone with clear water, without aggressive products, then let it dry naturally. Wipe the stick if it is wet before storing it in a dry place.

BUILD YOUR INK KIT

To work on strokes, this set can be combined with the bamboo calligraphy brush, the traditional rabbit hair brush or the set of 5 Chinese calligraphy brushes.

To receive ink with balanced diffusion, you can use it with semi-ripe Xuan paper or handmade Xuan paper.

To rest the brush between strokes and keep the area clean, it can accompany the blue Dragon ceramic brush rest or the black studio brush holder.

For a larger inkstone with an engraved lid, you can also check out the natural inkstone.

🤍 Ikane Studio Tip
Place only a few drops of water on the stone, then grind without excessive pressure. The quality of the black mainly depends on the time spent on the gesture, the amount of water, and the regularity of the movement.
