Experimental Watercolor Palette – 12 colors for notebooks and colorful studies

Each compact palette brings together 12 solid watercolor colors to explore different color moods, test mixes, and work on diffusion effects on paper.

Each series offers a distinct chromatic direction: mineral tones, oceanic landscapes, soft colors, or more vibrant shades depending on the chosen variant. The color reacts differently depending on the amount of water, the type of paper, and the drying time.

It is suitable for water-compatible notebooks, illustration, palette research, light washes, colorful transitions, and more experimental trials before a final composition.

INFORMATION

Each palette is designed to quickly test a range of colors, build a mood, seek harmonies, or prepare a composition before working on a more elaborate format.

Solid colors activate with water. A lightly loaded brush gives a drier, more controlled line; damp paper allows for smoother transitions, diffuse edges, and organic effects.

The compact format allows the palette to be kept close at hand for notebooks, color tests, watercolor sketches, or small visual studies.

FEATURES

Type: solid watercolor
Number of colors: 12
Packaging: thin cardboard packaging with plastic base
Use: watercolor, illustration, water-compatible notebook, color research, pictorial experimentation

USE & CARE

Lightly moisten the color with a clean brush, then pick up the material gradually. Add more or less water depending on the desired intensity: dense color, light wash, gradient, or diffuse transition.

To create diffusion effects, work on damp paper. To maintain sharper outlines, use dry paper and a more controlled amount of water.

After use, let the colors dry before closing the palette. Rinse brushes with clear water and avoid mixing too much water directly into the pans to preserve color readability.

COMPLEMENTARY TOOLS

For washes, backgrounds, and uniform flat areas, this palette can be paired with the bamboo flat brush set.

For watercolor sketches, color tests, and preparatory studies, you can also consult the Drawing collection.

Preferably use water-friendly paper. Paper that is too thin or too absorbent can buckle, cause colors to bleed, or mark the reverse side.

🤍 Ikane workshop tip
Testing colors on very damp paper brings out more variations in transitions and diffusion textures. The Ocean, Forest, and Morandi palettes are particularly suitable for natural compositions and atmospheric studies.
