Set of 4 flat bamboo brushes – washes, flat colors and backgrounds
This set includes four flat brushes of progressive sizes, designed for applying washes, moistening paper, creating backgrounds, or laying down even flat colors with watercolor, diluted ink, or light gouache.
The wide head allows for loading water or color, then applying it with broad strokes on the paper. Unlike a round brush, which is designed for detail or lines, a flat brush is used to create a surface: a wet background, a gradient, a colored band, a smooth transition, or a blend between two areas.
The semi-carbonized bamboo handles provide a light and stable grip. The blend of natural bristles announced by the supplier results in a flexible fiber, suitable for covering strokes, progressive washes, and backgrounds that can be worked without numerous re-applications.
Information
The set contains four brush widths: 20, 30, 40, and 50 mm. Each size allows for adapting the stroke to the format of the support: small card, notebook, watercolor paper, or larger composition.
Flat brushes are particularly useful for preparing a surface before painting, laying down a homogeneous background, creating a sky, a body of water, a soft shadow area, or a regular colored passage.
They can be used with watercolor, diluted ink, light gouache, or any water-based technique on suitable paper.

Use & Care
Before a large wash, lightly moisten the paper, then load the brush without crushing the bristles. Work in continuous strokes, from one edge to the other, to limit re-application marks.
After use, rinse with clear water, remove excess water without twisting the bristles, reshape the head with your finger, and let dry flat or head down.
Compatible media
For ink washes, these brushes can be paired with
handmade Xuan paper,
depending on the desired absorption level.
For long sessions, background tests, or repeated strokes, they can also be used with the
semi-treated vegetable paper roll.
🤍 Ikane Studio Tip
For a smooth background, choose a brush size wide enough to cover the area without multiple passes. The more water the brush holds, the slower and more continuous the stroke should be.
