Set of 3 Calligraphy Brushes – Stiff Fibers for Strong Strokes, Sumi-e, and Ink

This set of 3 calligraphy brushes is designed for traditional calligraphy, sumi-e, ink drawing, and practices where brush pressure shapes the stroke.

The firm natural fibers react quickly to pressure. They allow for creating clean lines, strong fills, and precise variations in thickness.

The three sizes allow you to adapt your movements for large characters, intermediate strokes, or more contained details, with a long handle that supports arm movement.

INFORMATION

These brushes are suitable for slow, firm, and structured strokes. Their firm tip retains its shape better during the stroke, which helps maintain a legible line, even when pressure varies.

Unlike a very soft brush, which absorbs movements more and produces more fluid transitions, this set offers more resistance under the hand. It is better suited for constructed characters, long lines, and strong contrasts.

The result depends on the ink load, the paper used, the fiber's moisture, and the arm's movement. On highly absorbent Xuan paper, the stroke will spread faster; on semi-treated paper, it will remain more controlled.

USE & CARE

Before first use, fully moisten the fibers with clear water to soften them and remove any storage stiffness.

Load the brush gradually. For a clean stroke, remove excess water or ink on the edge of the ink stone, dish, or palette before drawing.

Work with the weight of your arm rather than finger pressure. Stroke stability often comes from overall body movement, especially for long lines and large characters.

After use, rinse the fibers with clear water until the ink disappears. Do not twist the tip. Gently reshape it with your fingers, then let it air dry, ideally upside down.

PAIR WITH

To prepare ink by hand, this set can be paired with the ink stick set, the solid ink stick or the 7.5 cm ink stone.

To work on stroke diffusion, you can use it with handmade Xuan paper, semi-ripe Xuan paper or the semi-treated vegetable paper roll.

To rest brushes between strokes, you can add the jade effect ceramic brush rest or the blue Dragon brush rest.

To dry brushes upside down after rinsing, you can also check out the hanging calligraphy brush holder.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Fully moisten the fibers before first use. For strong strokes, don't just press with your fingers: engage your arm, slow your movement, and let the tip regain its shape between strokes.
