Bamboo Chinese calligraphy brush

This bamboo brush features a fine, flexible tip for calligraphy, ink drawing, sumi-e, and stroke practice.

The tip reacts to pressure and tilt: used lightly, it produces a fine line; pressed further onto the paper, it spreads out to lay down a wider stroke.

It can be used with liquid ink or with ink prepared from a solid stick. The chosen paper will then significantly alter the diffusion and sharpness of the lines.

INFORMATION

The width of the stroke depends on three elements: the pressure applied, the angle of the brush, and the amount of ink in the tip.

On highly absorbent paper, the ink diffuses rapidly around the stroke. More treated paper slows this diffusion and allows for sharper contours.

SPECIFICATIONS
  • Handle: bamboo
  • Tip: fine and flexible
  • Techniques: calligraphy, sumi-e, and ink drawing
  • Uses: characters, fine lines, contours, details, and thickness variations
USE & CARE

Before first use, gently moisten the tip with clear water. Then, charge it with ink without crushing it against the bottom of the stone or dish.

Start with light pressure, then gradually increase it to observe how much the tip can open while still returning to its shape.

After use, rinse until the water runs clear, reshape the tip with your fingers, then leave to dry flat or hanging. Do not let ink dry in the fibers.

TO PAIR WITH

To observe different levels of diffusion, use the artisanal Xuan paper , available in untreated, semi-treated, or treated versions.

To prepare black ink by hand, pair it with the Mosong Sumi ink stick .

To maintain several levels of dilution during a session, use the 5-well ceramic palette .

♥ IKANE STUDIO TIP

Draw three lines with the same ink load: one by lightly brushing the paper, one with medium pressure, and one by opening the tip further. This test helps you quickly understand the brush's actual range before beginning.
