Calligraphy Set – The Four Treasures of the Study

This set brings together the essential tools used for preparing ink by hand and practicing Chinese calligraphy, wash painting, and ink wash painting.

Depending on the model chosen, it includes several brushes, an inkstone, a solid ink stick, and various accessories for preparing, diluting, and applying ink during your session.

Paper is not included. It should be chosen separately based on the desired level of diffusion: more absorbent paper to allow the ink to spread, or more treated paper to maintain a sharper line.

INFORMATION

The Four Treasures traditionally refer to the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. This set brings together the tools necessary for grinding the ink and for writing; the paper should be selected separately.

The stone receives a few drops of water and is used to rub the ink stick. The longer the grinding continues, the more concentrated the ink becomes. The brushes then allow you to vary the width, pressure, and amount of ink deposited.

CONTENTS BY MODEL

The exact contents vary according to the selected model. Always check the items displayed for the chosen model before adding to your cart.

  • Potential tools: brushes, inkstone, solid ink stick, and preparation accessories
  • Techniques: Chinese calligraphy, wash painting, and ink painting
  • Paper: not included
FIRST USE

Place a few drops of water on the stone and then rub the ink stick almost vertically, with the base flat, using steady movements. Start with a little water: it is easier to dilute ink that is too dense than to thicken a mixture that is too liquid.

Test the ink on a scrap of the same paper. If the black remains too grey, continue grinding; if it becomes too thick, add one or two drops of water.

After your session, rinse the stone and brushes with clean water. Wipe the damp part of the ink stick and allow all elements to dry before closing the box.

USE & CARE

Prepare only the amount of ink needed for the session. Dense ink produces a deeper black; a few extra drops of water allow you to obtain greys and washes.

Rinse the brushes until the ink disappears from the fibers, without twisting the tip. Rinse the stone without letting a thick layer of ink dry on the grinding area.

Store the set only when the elements are dry to avoid stagnant moisture around the brushes and accessories.

TO PAIR WITH

To get started with absorption that is easier to control, use the artisanal Xuan paper in the semi-treated version. The same paper is also available in untreated and treated versions to compare different levels of diffusion.

To dry your brushes head-down after rinsing, use the calligraphy brush holder .

♥ IKANE STUDIO TIP

First, prepare a dense black ink on the stone, then dilute a small amount in a separate cup. You immediately obtain two ink tones without needing to modify your entire preparation.
