This calligraphy set brings together the essential tools for preparing ink by hand and for practicing Chinese calligraphy, sumi-e, wash painting, and ink painting.
Depending on the chosen model, the set includes several brushes, an inkstone, a solid ink stick, and useful accessories for preparing, diluting, applying, or organizing the ink during a session.
Paper is not included: you will need to provide Xuan paper or a medium compatible with ink, depending on the desired absorption and diffusion level.

INFORMATION
The Four Treasures of the Study traditionally refer to the brush, ink, paper, and inkstone. This set brings together the tools necessary for preparing ink and drawing, but the paper must be chosen separately.
The brushes provided, depending on the model, allow for working with various line widths. The inkstone holds water and is used for grinding the ink stick. The included accessories can help support the brush, organize the ink, or maintain a distinct dilution during the session.
The set is suitable for a complete introduction, for workshop storage, or as a gift for someone who wishes to begin calligraphy with an organized set.

WHAT DISTINGUISHES THE MODELS
The models may differ in their presentation, number of accessories, or how they store tools. Some prioritize a more rigid and compartmentalized presentation; others may be simpler or easier to transport.
The Deluxe Wood model emphasizes a more structured presentation, with a visual arrangement of elements and a stronger presence as a workshop set or gift.
In all cases, the purpose of the set remains the same: to bring together basic tools to understand the link between ink grinding, brush loading, dilution, and paper reaction.
FIRST USE
For a short session, start with only a few drops of water. If your model includes an inkstone and a solid ink stick, rub the stick on the flat part of the stone for about 3 to 5 minutes, then test the ink on a scrap of the same paper.
Hold the stick almost vertically and keep its base flat on the stone. Make regular movements, without pressing hard, to gradually release the material.
If the line remains gray and very liquid, continue grinding in 30-second sequences. If the ink becomes too thick, add one or two drops of water, then mix again.
If your model includes an inkwell or a small bowl, transfer a portion of the prepared ink to get a second dilution or to keep a lighter value next to the concentrated black.
After the session, rinse the brushes and inkstone with clear water. Wipe the wet side of the stick and let each item dry completely before closing or storing the set.
USE & CARE
Prepare the ink just before the session, gradually adjusting the density. More concentrated ink gives deep blacks; more diluted ink allows for working with washes and intermediate values.
Rinse brushes with clear water until no ink remains in the fibers. Remove excess water without twisting the tip, then let air dry.
Rinse the inkstone without detergent, then wipe it with a clean cloth. Do not let ink dry in a thick layer on the grinding surface.
Store items only when dry. Closing a set with damp brushes can retain moisture and deform the fibers.
PAIR WITH
Paper determines the ink diffusion speed. For beginners,
handmade Xuan paper
with a semi-treated finish facilitates initial attempts, while untreated Xuan paper requires a more direct stroke.
For long, repetitive, or free-form practice, you can supplement with the
semi-treated vegetable paper roll,
which allows you to unroll only the necessary length.

🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Prepare a strong black on the inkstone, then transfer a small amount into an inkwell or a small bowl with a few drops of water. You will obtain two shades of black and can switch between them without interrupting the session.
