16 cm Solid Ink Stick – Calligraphy, Sumi-e and Ink Drawing
This solid ink stick is used to prepare liquid ink on a wet stone, for calligraphy, sumi-e, wash painting, and brush drawing.
Its 16 cm size offers a comfortable grip during grinding. The pigment is gradually released upon contact with water and the stone, allowing you to adjust the ink's density according to the preparation time.
Weighing around 120 g, this dense format is suitable for regular practice. It allows you to prepare ink on demand, in small quantities for exercises or a deeper black for strong lines.
INFORMATION
The ink stick is used with an ink stone and a few drops of clear water. Unlike already liquid ink, it allows you to prepare only the necessary quantity and control the depth of the black.
Lightly ground ink is suitable for washes, light strokes, and dilution exercises. Ink prepared for a longer time results in a denser black, useful for bold characters, deep lines, and stronger contrasts.
The result depends on the stone used, the amount of water, the paper, the brush, and the time spent grinding.
CHARACTERISTICS
Length: 16 cm
Width: 3.5 cm
Thickness: 1.7 cm
Weight: approx. 120 g
Usage: calligraphy, sumi-e, wash painting, ink drawing, brush painting
Preparation: grinding on a wet ink stone
USE & MAINTENANCE
Place a few drops of clear water on the ink stone, then rub the stick slowly in circular or regular movements. Add water gradually rather than over-diluting from the start.
For a lighter ink, reduce grinding time or add a little water. For a deeper black, extend preparation until you get a denser, more opaque ink.
After use, wipe the stick if it is damp, then let it dry before storing. Avoid storing it in a humid place to preserve its surface.
ASSEMBLE YOUR INK KIT
To prepare ink, this stick can be paired with the
natural ink stone with lid
or the
beginner's ink stone and stick set,
depending on the desired working format.
For line work, it can accompany the

the
traditional natural rabbit hair brush
or the

To receive ink with balanced diffusion, you can use it with
semi-ripe Xuan paper
or
handmade Xuan paper.
To rest brushes between strokes and keep the table clean, you can complete the set with the
Blue Dragon ceramic brush rest
or the
black studio brush holder.
🤍 Ikane Workshop Tip
Add only a few drops of water at first, then grind slowly. The longer the grinding time, the denser the black becomes. For washes, prepare a lighter ink, then adjust gradually.
